What are the Serial Experiments Lain DVD and Blu-ray editions?

Five Japanese volumes became four American ones; the series vanished from print for five years; then it came back restored, the full disc history of a small show with nine lives.

In Japan, Lain was released across LD, VHS, and DVD in five volumes. The afterlife came in boxes: the DVD-BOX Яesurrection in 2000 (sold with a promo DVD, LPR-309), a TV-BOX reissue in 2005, and in December 2009 the Blu-ray Box RESTORE, the series redigitized to 4:3 1080p, with many CG sequences, including the “present day, present time” openings, re-rendered in higher quality rather than upscaled.

THE TWO SHORES

Japan first, America rescued

North America · Pioneer, then FunimationPictured: the first American DVD volume. Pioneer Entertainment released Lain on VHS and DVD in 1999 in four volumes, Navi, Knights, Deus, Reset. When Geneon USA closed in December 2007 the discs went out of print; at Anime Expo 2010 Funimation announced its rescue license, and re-released the series in 2012 and 2014.

Between the two shores sits a television chapter: Lain’s American TV debut came on TechTV’s Anime Unleashed on January 21, 2003, and the series returned to US television on the Funimation Channel in October 2012. Today it streams on Crunchyroll (since 2017); the UK license sits with MVM Films, the Australian with Universal/Sony.

WHAT EACH ERA IS FOR

A collector’s reading
The LaserDisc era
The five-volume Japanese LDs are the broadcast-era objects: 1998 plastic, 1998 prices of attention. They are the closest physical form to the night the show aired.
The Geneon DVDs
The four American volumes are the discs that built the Western cult, and the ones that spent 2007–2012 out of print, appreciating in the dark.
RESTORE and after
The 2009 Japanese Blu-ray is the definitive presentation the 2012 Funimation release inherited: redigitized, CG re-rendered, still 4:3, the restoration that respected the frame.
