The Serial Experiments Lain gallery
Thirteen television layers, one PlayStation labyrinth, and a handful of paper: the whole of Lain, shelved.
Serial Experiments Lain was never a franchise with a hundred SKUs. It is a small body of work, a 1998 anime, a 1998 PlayStation game that is not really a game, one artbook that exists in two forms, an 18-page color manga, and a shelf of CDs and discs, that has been loved continuously for more than twenty-five years. This gallery is the map of that shelf: every object this archive documents, in one place.
Everything pictured here is shown to identify the genuine article. Where an object could not be pictured from a verifiable source, it is described in words instead, the same rule the rest of the Library keeps.
THE FACES OF LAIN
Yoshitoshi ABe · 1998
The DVD face
ABe’s Lain as North America first met her: the cover of Pioneer’s first DVD volume, “Navi” (1999). The bear-eared hood and the tangle of cable are the two images the series is still recognized by.
The NAVI room
Lain at the machine she keeps rebuilding: liquid-cooled, wall-sized, and permanently unfinished. The still that defines the series’ idea of going online in 1998.
The three Lains
ABe’s own sheet of Lain’s three selves, the shy child of the real world, the bold Lain of the Wired, and the sly third one. The writers marked the three in the scripts by writing her name three different ways.
THE OBJECTS
What this archive documentsThe PlayStation game
Pioneer LDC, November 26, 1998. A “network simulator” the makers called Psycho-Stretch-Ware, sold on two discs and never released outside Japan.
An Omnipresence in Wired
The 1999 artbook: 128 pages of ABe’s Lain illustrations, the original Layer images from AX magazine, and the only Lain manga, bound in.
The discs
From five Japanese DVD volumes and the 2000 Яesurrection box to the 2009 Blu-ray RESTORE and Funimation’s 2012 rescue.
The CDs
Three Pioneer soundtrack albums: Nakaido’s songs, the Cyberia Mix club record, and BOOTLEG, the ambient score on a CD that also carries a game.
