What music is Soul Eater known for?

Taku Iwasaki's genre mixing score, T.M.Revolution's Resonance and Tommy Heavenly6's Paper Moon, plus a full character song program for the cast.

The Soul Eater soundtrack was composed by Taku Iwasaki, whose style, hip hop beats under jazz harmony under orchestral writing, matched Ohkubo's genre mixing art better than a conventional score could have. Battle cues swing, comedy cues strut, and the madness themes turn the same toolkit sinister, so the whole 51 episodes sound like one band in different moods.

The openings became the public face. Resonance, by T.M.Revolution, is a high velocity rock single that Japanese audiences voted among the defining anime themes of its year, and the second opening, Paper Moon by Tommy Heavenly6, matched it with a Halloween pop style so fitted to the series that the pairing is still the first thing many fans hear when they see Death City.

The endings rotated styles, from Stance Punks' rock to Nishino Kana's pop balladry, and the late night Repeat Show broadcasts used additional themes, which means the full theme catalog is larger than a single broadcast run suggests. Collectors of the Japanese singles should check which broadcast version a release documents.

Character songs filled out the catalog, with the main cast performing in character across singles and album collections, a standard Gangan and Bones era program that gave the voice cast a recording presence alongside the drama CDs. The soundtrack albums, two main volumes for the TV series, remain the core listening documents.

Today the music is the easiest layer of 2008 Soul Eater to collect: Japanese CD pressings with obi are plentiful, the singles are well documented, and streaming has kept Resonance and Paper Moon in constant circulation. The Library shelves the music with the anime era, since every note of it belongs to the Bones production.
