Is Terranigma Really Coming Back?
On August 24, 2026, Clear River Games, working with Square Enix, announced the return of Terranigma for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam and GOG. A follow-up trailer on September 16 set the date: January 14, 2027. It is the game's first re-release of any kind since 1995, and its first official availability in North America, closing the story that began when Enix America closed in the 1990s.
The port keeps the 16-bit game intact, down to an optional CRT filter, and adds a modern layer: an easy-view status window, new controls, aspect ratio selection, adjusted difficulty, boosted magic damage for the Magirock system, and a new Arranged Mode rebalancing the game. The original people are inside the project: director and writer Tomoyoshi Miyazaki and writer Reiko Takebayashi are involved, the original composers are rearranging select tracks, and character designer Kamui Fujiwara is providing new key artwork and additional in-game designs. The game was playable at Tokyo Game Show in September 2026, in the Happinet booth.
The physical program is built for the audience that kept the game alive. The Standard Edition is $39.99 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, with a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition at $44.99 on a card that also runs on Switch. A Foiled Standard Edition is limited to the Clear River and Limited Run Games stores. The SteelBook Edition is $64.99. At the top, the Gaia Edition, $199.99, bundles a Yomi figure, a Pandora's Box music box that plays "Elle's Theme," a 200-page art book, the soundtrack on CD, a cloth world map, and an enamel pin of Ark. Demand for it was strong enough that Clear River announced a second production run in October 2026.
