The History of Frieren

A fantasy manga about what happens after the quest, and after its heroes.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Sōsō no Frieren) began in Shogakukan's Weekly Shōnen Sunday on April 28, 2020, written by Kanehito Yamada and drawn by Tsukasa Abe. Its premise inverts the fantasy epic: the Demon King is already dead when the story opens, and the hero party's elven mage, Frieren, must learn what a ten-year quest meant to the humans who aged and died around her.

Within a year it had won the Manga Taishō and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize's New Creator Prize. The Madhouse anime of 2023 carried it to a different order of fame: the manga passed 35 million copies in circulation by January 2026, and the anime sat at the top of MyAnimeList's all-time rankings for an extended run.

WHAT IT IS ABOUT

The premise, kept plain
The party
Himmel the hero, Heiter the priest, Eisen the dwarf warrior and Frieren the elf mage spent ten years defeating the Demon King. To Frieren, who will live more than a thousand years, the decade felt brief.
The debt
Fifty years on, Himmel dies of old age. At his funeral Frieren admits she never tried to know him, and the rest of the story is her attempt to settle that debt.
The road north
She takes Heiter's adopted daughter Fern as her apprentice, adds Eisen's apprentice Stark, and walks toward Aureole, the resting place of souls, where Himmel might be spoken to once more.
