The history of Record of Lodoss War

Forty years, five media, one island: the campaign that became the template for Japanese high fantasy.

Lodoss is the rare franchise whose whole history is a straight line. A tabletop campaign (1986) becomes a magazine serial, then novels (1988), then a tabletop system of its own (1989), then the anime that defined high fantasy for a generation (1990), then television (1998), and then, after a long quiet, new novels (2019) and a new game (2021) in the same decade. More than ten million Lodoss books are in print.

THE CHRONOLOGY

1986 to 2001
1986–1989 · The replays
Mizuno’s D&D campaign runs in Comptiq. Group SNE is founded. The replay genre is born as a side effect.
1988–1993 · The novels
Seven volumes from Kadokawa, illustrated by Yutaka Izubuchi, among the earliest domestic Japanese high-fantasy novels, plus two side-story collections in 1995.
1990–1991 · The OVA
Madhouse’s thirteen-episode video series, released June 1990 to November 1991, becomes the visual standard for fantasy anime.
1998 · The TV series
Chronicles of the Heroic Knight, 27 episodes from AIC on TV Tokyo, adapts the later novels with Spark as its knight.

THE LONG TAIL

2001 to today
The quiet years
After Next Generation closed in 2006, Lodoss survived in the West mostly as a beloved memory and an out-of-print DVD, while replays and fan preservation kept the originals circulating.
The rescues · 2017
Funimation licensed both anime series in April 2017 after Central Park Media’s editions had been out of print for over a decade, and Seven Seas published the first English Lodoss novel that December.
The return · 2019–2021
Mizuno’s Crown of the Covenant (2019), a Crown manga, and Team Ladybug’s Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth (2021) put Lodoss back into production on both sides of the Pacific.
