The Trails anime: the Sky OVA and Northern War

The saga resists adaptation, thirteen games of continuity compress badly, so its anime are side stories and spotlights, not retellings.

The first Legend of Heroes anime predates Trails itself: a two-part OVA of Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes in 1992, loosely adapting the first game, dubbed by Urban Vision for North American VHS in 1997. The Trails era's turn came with Trails in the Sky SC's two-part OVA by Kinema Citrus (late 2011 and early 2012, licensed in North America by Sentai Filmworks), a compressed retelling of the second game's opening movements, made by a young studio whose staff would soon define a decade of anime craft elsewhere.

The substantial work is The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel, Northern War, a twelve-episode Tatsunoko Production series aired in early 2023. Wisely, it does not attempt Cold Steel's plot: it tells an original story from the other side of the map, following Lavian Winslet of the Northern Jaegers in annexed North Ambria, in the gap between Cold Steel II and III, the empire's expansion seen by the people it absorbed. It is the adaptation model the series' structure actually permits: new ground inside the timeline, expanding the novel rather than abridging it. Falcom's characters have also appeared in the gag shorts of Minna Atsumare! Falcom Gakuen (2014–2015), shelved here for completeness, and for the sight of Ouroboros Enforcers in a school comedy.
