What are Hirohiko Araki's art exhibitions?

A short list with heavy names: the Louvre, a Gucci collaboration in Florence and Tokyo contexts, and one of the largest manga exhibitions ever held in Japan.

Araki's exhibition record begins with the Louvre. His participation in the museum's 2009 Bande Dessinee project, and the Rohan work it produced, placed original manga art inside the Louvre's exhibition program, an honor the museum had extended to very few comics artists from any country. The separate Louvre entry in this hub covers the book; the exhibition itself is the credential that changed how institutions treated his work.

Fashion gave him his second museum adjacent stage. His collaboration with Gucci in the early 2010s produced JoJo artwork displayed in the brand's exhibition and retail spaces, including a full Rohan story created with the house and installations in Tokyo and Italy. Where the Louvre show certified Araki as an artist, the Gucci project certified him as a fashion world contemporary, the return of forty years of runway influence documented in this hub's fashion entry.

The peak was Hirohiko Araki JoJo Exhibition: Ripples of Adventure, held at the National Art Center in Tokyo in 2018 and later in Osaka. It was one of the largest exhibitions ever devoted to a single manga artist in a national museum: original manuscripts, large new works painted for the show, and rooms sequenced by part and theme. Attendance and the catalogue's publishing success made it a reference point for every manga exhibition since.

For collectors, the exhibition trail creates its own shelf: catalogues, especially the Ripples of Adventure volume, exhibition exclusive prints and the Louvre and Gucci books. These are among the most reliable Araki items to document, since museum publishers print clean publication data, and the Library's Araki gallery page reserves a wall for exhibition art and covers.
