What are Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen?

The first remakes: 1996 Kanto on 2004 hardware, with new islands in the back.

Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, released in Japan on January 29, 2004 and in North America on September 9, 2004, are full remakes of the first generation for the Game Boy Advance, the first remakes the series ever produced. Kanto is rebuilt on Ruby and Sapphire's engine, with their mechanics, abilities and natures, and a context-sensitive help system layered in for new players.

The remakes are not simple ports. They add a Fame Checker that profiles the famous trainers of Kanto, the Teachy TV tutorial device, and, after the Elite Four, an entirely new region: the Sevii Islands, an archipelago south of Kanto with its own story that ties the remakes forward into the wider third generation.

Every launch copy, in Japan and the West alike, bundled the Game Boy Advance Wireless Adapter, the accessory that let the generation trade and battle without a cable and that powered the Union Room, the games' wireless lobby. The adapter, and what happened to the bundle, has its own shelf in this cluster.

FireRed and LeafGreen sold 12 million copies, proving the template the series still follows: the oldest world, rebuilt for the newest machine, sells like a new game.
