What are the Devil May Cry strategy guides?

Three publishers fought over the first game's secrets in a single autumn.

Devil May Cry arrived in the last golden age of the printed strategy guide, and the market treated it like a prize. In North America in 2001, one game received three English guides: BradyGames' Official Strategy Guide, Prima Games' Official Strategy Guide, and Versus Books' Official Perfect Guide, the last also published in German. The BradyGames book, by Dan Birlew, set the series' print standard at 160 pages, with area maps of Mallet Island, the full weapons and items listing, boss strategies, puzzle solutions and the Secret Mission locations that the game itself hides completely.

Birlew then wrote the whole trilogy for BradyGames: the Devil May Cry 2 guide (2003, 144 pages, in the publisher's Signature Series with a fold-out poster), and the Devil May Cry 3 guide (2005), whose walkthrough opens every mission with a recommended style and equipment loadout, the print era adapting to a game built on choices. Japan's shelf ran parallel and deeper, as this Library's guide censuses keep finding: Kadokawa, Enterbrain, Kodansha and Futabasha all published for the series, and the pattern held to the end of the era, when Future Press took the English guide for Devil May Cry 4 in 2008. Every one of these books is long out of print.

THE ENGLISH SHELF

Dan Birlew. 160 pages. ISBN 9780744000948. Castle maps, weapons and items, boss strategies, puzzle solutions, game secrets: the complete paper companion to Mallet Island, poster-era BradyGames at full size.
Devil May Cry · Prima and Versus, 2001
Prima's Official Strategy Guide and Versus Books' Official Perfect Guide (Versus Books and Cyber Press, in English and German) chased the same launch. Three guides for one new series was a statement: every publisher in the business expected a hit.
Devil May Cry 2 · BradyGames, 2003
Dan Birlew. 144 pages. ISBN 9780744002270. A Signature Series volume with a special cover treatment and a fold-out poster of the heroes. Walkthroughs for both Dante and Lucia, secret room locations, and strategies for the hidden characters, costumes and modes.
Devil May Cry 3 · BradyGames, 2005
Dan Birlew. ISBN 9780744004397. The walkthrough's mission briefs begin with a recommended style, the guide conceding that in this game the first decision is how you intend to fight. Future Press took the baton for Devil May Cry 4 in 2008, in English and German.

THE JAPANESE SHELF

The parallel library
Kadokawa · Devil May Cry Graphic Edition, 2001
ISBN 978-4-04-707071-4. Part guide, part art and development book, and a primary source to this day: the Kamiya interviews quoted across the series' history were translated from this volume.
Enterbrain · Official Guidebooks, 2003 and 2005
Famitsu's publisher documented Devil May Cry 2 and 3 in its Official Guidebook line, the Japanese standard for frame-level thoroughness.
Kodansha · Saikyo Devil Hunter, 2003 and 2005
Kodansha's "strongest devil hunter" guides for the second and third games, matched by Futabasha's Devil May Cry 3 Perfect Capture Guide in 2005. A Western game shelf rarely shows how crowded the Japanese one was.
