What are the English editions of Fist of the North Star?

English readers waited thirty-two years for an edition that reached the last chapter.

Twice, English publication of Hokuto no Ken started with confidence and stopped mid-story. Viz Communications began in 1989 with an eight-issue monthly comic covering the first sixteen chapters, returned from 1995 to 1997 with eighteen more issues, and collected what it had in four graphic novels: Fist of the North Star, Night of the Jackal, Southern Cross and Blood Brothers. The art was mirrored for left-to-right reading, and the run ended at chapter 44 of 245.

Gutsoon! Entertainment, the American arm of Coamix, tried again in 2003 with the Master Edition: large-format volumes, the original right-to-left orientation restored, and the black-and-white art digitally colorized. From the fourth volume, each book carried a new cover painted by Hara for this edition. It stopped at volume 9 in 2004 when Gutsoon left the North American market; a solicited tenth volume never appeared. (Japan received its own version of the colorized edition, which stopped at four volumes.)

The complete English edition finally arrived from Viz Media: eighteen hardcover volumes under the Viz Signature line, adapted from the Kyūkyokuban, released from June 15, 2021 to September 23, 2025. For the first time, the whole manga, all 245 chapters, exists in English in a single uniform edition.

THE THREE ATTEMPTS

1989 to 2025
Viz Communications · 1989–97
Monthly comics first, then four graphic novels. Mirrored art, translated sound effects, chapters 1 to 44. The NES game was advertised in these comics, and for years they were simply what Fist of the North Star was in America.
Master Edition · 2003–04
Gutsoon!/Raijin. Nine volumes, chapters 1 to 74, fully colorized, right-to-left, with new Hara covers from volume 4. A tenth volume was solicited and cancelled. The colorization makes these visually unique among all editions, Japanese or English.
Viz Signature hardcovers · 2021–25
Eighteen volumes following the Kyūkyokuban division and artwork, larger trim, hardcover. Volume 1 includes The Birth of Fist of the North Star, the creators’ own account of the pressure-point idea and the pilot stories.

WHY THE FIRST TWO FAILED

The documented reasons
The market moved
Viz’s run ended in the late-1990s shakeout of the American comics market, with the series licensed but unfinished; no successor picked it up for years.
The publisher folded
The Master Edition did not fail on salesmanship alone: Gutsoon withdrew from North America entirely in 2004, ending every series it published, Hokuto included.
What changed
By 2021 the manga market could support an eighteen-volume hardcover of a violent 1980s classic, and the Kyūkyokuban gave Viz a modern, restored source edition to print from.
