What are the Escaflowne light novels?

The novelization of the series was written by Yumiko Tsukamoto with Shoji Kawamori, serialized in Kadokawa's Newtype magazine, and collected in six volumes under the "New Type Novels" label between June 1996 and August 1997. The illustrations were provided by character designer Nobuteru Yuki and mechanical director Hirotoshi Sano, which makes the set a small gallery of production art in its own right.
