What are the Hellsing English editions?
Three English lives: Dark Horse’s ten paperbacks (2003 to 2010), their second edition (2023 to 2025), and the three Deluxe hardcovers (2020 to 2021).
Dark Horse Comics licensed Hellsing in 2003, after another American publisher had already passed on the series for its content, and published all ten volumes in English between December 2003 and May 2010, translated by Duane Johnson. The same publisher then rebuilt the series twice: as oversized Deluxe hardcovers, and as a second edition of the paperbacks.
THE DELUXE EDITION
The original page size, at lastThe format
Three hardcovers in the manga’s original 7 by 10 inch magazine size, a first for the series in any language edition of the whole run: embossed casing, sewn binding, and a ribbon marker, each volume over 600 pages.
The contents
Deluxe volume 1 (696 pages, July 15, 2020) collects original volumes 1 to 4. Volume 2 (648 pages, November 2020) collects volumes 5 to 8. Volume 3 (648 pages, June 16, 2021) collects volumes 9 and 10, all three Crossfire chapters, a colour gallery, and the author notes and bonus art from across the run, including colour art the paperbacks never carried.
The art argument
Hirano draws long, dense pages built for the magazine sheet. The Deluxe is the only English edition that shows them at the size they were drawn for, which is why art-led readers treat it as the definitive set.
THE PAPERBACKS
Two editions, one translationFirst edition, 2003 to 2010
Ten volumes, one a year at the series’ pace and slower toward the end: volume 1 in December 2003, volume 10 on May 19, 2010. Volume 10 then spent five consecutive weeks on the New York Times manga bestseller list, and the series passed half a million copies sold in the United States.
Second edition, 2023 to 2025
Dark Horse reprinted all ten volumes with new ISBNs between November 8, 2023, and April 22, 2025, returning the singles to print in the Deluxe era. The two editions are told apart fastest by their ISBN blocks: 1-59307 and 1-59582 for the first, 1-50673 for the second.
Elsewhere in English
The series also ran in English from Chuang Yi in Singapore, whose editions Madman Entertainment distributed in Australia and New Zealand.
