What are the Saint Seiya PlayStation 2 games?

Two games, one absence: North America never got either of them.

When Saint Seiya returned to consoles in the 2000s, it came back as a fighter. Saint Seiya: The Sanctuary (April 7, 2005 in Japan; June 30, 2005 in Europe) stages the Twelve Palaces as a 3D arena game by Dimps. Its sequel, Saint Seiya: The Hades, adapts the Hades OVAs, and inverts the usual release order: Europe and Australia played it from September 29, 2006; Japan waited until February 1, 2007.

THE TWO GAMES

Dimps on PlayStation 2
The Sanctuary · 2005
The Gold Saint gauntlet as a fighting game: twelve temples, twelve duels, the anime’s Sanctuary arc in interactive form. Released in Japan and Europe only.
The Hades · 2006/2007
Built on the Hades Chapter OVAs then still in production, with the revived Gold Saints and the Sanctuary invasion. The European-first release is the franchise’s market map printed on a game box.
The American gap
No North American release exists for either title. The 2003 DIC dub had failed on Cartoon Network, and US publishers read the territory as closed. American fans imported the PAL editions, region locks and all.

WHY THEY MATTER

The bridge to the modern games
The Dimps template
These two games are the foundation of everything after: Dimps carried the formula to Sanctuary Battle, Brave Soldiers and Soldiers’ Soul on PlayStation 3 and 4. Play the PS2 pair and you are holding the first draft of the modern Saint Seiya fighter.
PAL as the prize
For English-speaking collectors the European editions are the playable ones: English text, anime cast, no translation patch required, just a PAL-capable setup. The Japanese editions remain the shelf-beautiful originals.
