What are the Yu Yu Hakusho movies?

There are two theatrical films: a short 1993 feature and Yu Yu Hakusho: Poltergeist Report (1994), a full length original story by the TV staff.

Yu Yu Hakusho reached cinemas twice during its first fame. The first film, released in Japan in July 1993 as part of a Jump film festival program alongside features for other series, is a short of about 30 minutes: Koenma is kidnapped, and Yusuke's team mounts a rescue that plays like a bonus television episode at higher polish. It was made while the TV series was mid run and assumes the cast as of the early Dark Tournament era.

The substantial film is the second: Yu Yu Hakusho: Poltergeist Report, released in Japan in April 1994, known in Japanese as Meikai Shito Hen: Hono no Kizuna, The Netherworld Warriors. At about ninety minutes it is a full original story: while the Spirit World floods and fails, a sealed netherworld and its ruler Yakumo move against the three worlds, and the team fights a war the manga never tells. The TV staff, including director Noriyuki Abe's team at Pierrot, produced it at feature scale.

Poltergeist Report's place in continuity is deliberately loose: it uses the cast at near full strength, introduces film only characters, and contradicts nothing important because it asks to be read as a parallel adventure. Its action is the draw, with the team's combined techniques staged at a scale the weekly television budget could not reach, and its villain design leans into the series' demon court aesthetics.

The English history is tangled in the way 1990s anime licensing often was: the films were released in North America by different companies than the TV series' eventual home, with the short film and Poltergeist Report appearing on VHS and later DVD in editions separate from Funimation's television sets. That split is why complete Yu Yu Hakusho video collections always involve multiple publishers' discs.

For collectors, Japanese laserdisc and DVD editions of Poltergeist Report, with their period packaging, are the films' premium forms, and the 1993 short is most often found inside Japanese festival era releases. Neither film is required viewing for the story; both are time capsules of the franchise at its commercial peak.
