What did Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix+ add?
Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix+ is the tradition at full size: a two disc set, released in Japan on March 29, 2007. Disc one is Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, the expanded game. Disc two is Re:Chain of Memories, a full 3D remake of the Game Boy Advance card game, rebuilt as a PlayStation 2 title. The two discs even talk to each other: clear data from one unlocks bonuses in the other, so the box was designed to be played as a single long campaign.
The Final Mix additions to Kingdom Hearts II were the deepest the format ever went. A new Critical Mode difficulty. A new drive form, Limit Form, built from Sora's original moveset. Roxas becomes a full boss fight instead of a cutscene. The Absent Silhouettes let you challenge echoes of fallen Organization XIII members, and the Cavern of Remembrance dungeon ends in data rematches against all thirteen. Add the Mushroom XIII challenges, a Theater Mode for rewatching scenes, and the Lingering Will, an armored secret boss who remained unbeaten by most players and unexplained by the story for years.
And then there is the secret movie: an extended ending titled Birth by sleep, which introduced armored figures and a Keyblade graveyard that became the foundation of the prequel of the same name. A limited edition book, Kingdom Hearts: Another Report, accompanied the launch. The West received the set in pieces: Re:Chain of Memories alone in North America in December 2008, while Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix itself waited for HD 2.5 ReMIX in 2014. Nomura's summary of the arrangement is on the record: the Final Mix games are only Japanese exclusives.
