What do the Japanese Spy x Family volumes look like?
The Japanese Spy x Family is a Jump Comics+ paperback line. Volume 1 was released on July 4, 2019 (ISBN 978-4-08-882011-8) with 212 pages and Loid in a designer's chair on the cover, the format every volume since has followed: one character, one famous chair, a ring of props that describe them. New volumes are sold wrapped in a printed obi band carrying the series' latest circulation boast, so an early printing in its band is the copy that documents the moment. The current Japanese list price on the volume is ¥480 plus tax (about $3), and the printing history of each copy is recorded on the colophon page at the back, which is how Japanese collectors date a first printing.
The print runs are the story. Volume 3, in January 2020, carried an initial printing of 400,000 copies. Volume 6, released December 28, 2020, passed an initial print run of one million copies, the first Shonen Jump+ original ever to do it. Later volumes kept the scale: volume 11's first printing of 1.55 million copies was Shueisha's third-highest of its 2023 to 2024 year, and volume 14 opened at 1.3 million. The run stands at 17 volumes as of April 3, 2026.
The line has documented variants. Volume 8 (November 4, 2021) was the first to bundle goods: a preorder special edition packaged four rubber mobile straps of the family, drawn by Endo. In June 2021 Shueisha also issued digitally colored editions of the first three volumes in Japan. And volume 10, in October 2022, is the famous exception in the cover program: Endo dropped the designer chair motif for that book so the cover would fit its story, the only volume in the run without one.
