What happened to P.T. and Silent Hills?

P.T. was the free 2014 PlayStation 4 demo that secretly announced Silent Hills, a new entry from Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro starring Norman Reedus; when Konami cancelled the game in 2015 and removed P.T. from the PlayStation Store, the demo became unredownloadable and legendary.

P.T. appeared on the PlayStation Store in August 2014 credited to a fake studio, 7780s Studio, as a playable teaser with no explanation. Players found a looping L shaped hallway, a radio warning about a murder, one of horror's most dissected sound designs, and, at the end, the reveal: the project was Silent Hills, directed by Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro, with Norman Reedus as its lead, announced in a trailer that detonated across games media.

The teaser was acclaimed as a horror landmark in its own right, dense with hidden mechanics, phone calls, ghost photographs and a final puzzle so obscure its solution spread as folklore. Junji Ito was later confirmed to have been involved in creature design for the full game, a collaboration that survives only in interviews and concept fragments.

The cancellation followed Konami's rupture with Kojima, detailed on the Metal Gear people's pages in this library: in April 2015 Konami confirmed Silent Hills was cancelled, del Toro and Reedus confirmed their involvement was over, and P.T. was removed from the store. Crucially, Sony's system at the time did not allow redownloading a delisted free demo, so P.T. existed only on consoles that already held it.

Those consoles became artifacts: PlayStation 4 systems with P.T. installed were listed and sold at premiums for years, a secondary market in a free demo, and the episode hardened into the industry's standard cautionary tale about digital preservation. Fan recreations and the hallway's influence on a decade of first person horror kept the game culturally alive while legally frozen.

Kojima, del Toro and Reedus reunited independently on Death Stranding, which is not Silent Hill but is plainly its creative inheritance. For this shelf, P.T. is the missing object at the series' center: the most famous Silent Hill thing that cannot be collected, only remembered and, on a dwindling number of aging consoles, still played.
