What Happens in the Konoha Crush Arc?

The Konoha Crush (manga chapters 116 to 138) is the short, brutal payoff to the Chunin Exams: Orochimaru and the Sand invade the Leaf mid-tournament, Naruto fights Gaara jinchuriki to jinchuriki, and the Third Hokage dies defending the village.

The exam finals open as a public tournament, and Naruto's upset win over Neji Hyuga, the genius who believed fate was fixed, lands the series' thesis in front of the whole village. Before Sasuke's match with Gaara can finish, Orochimaru springs his alliance with the Sand Village: genjutsu drops the crowd, invaders pour in, and the Kazekage is revealed to be Orochimaru in disguise, taking the Third Hokage hostage on the stadium roof.

The Hokage duel is the emotional spine. Hiruzen Sarutobi fights Orochimaru and the reanimated first two Hokage, his own teachers, and ends it with the Reaper Death Seal, the same jutsu that sealed the Nine-Tails. He cannot take Orochimaru's soul, so he takes his arms instead, crippling his ninjutsu, and dies smiling at the village's future. Orochimaru flees, his invasion broken but his grudge intact.

Outside the walls, the invasion becomes Naruto's fight. Gaara, wounded and unraveling, fully releases Shukaku in the forest, and Naruto answers by summoning Gamabunta, the toad chief, and fighting a tailed beast head-on. The battle ends not with a finishing technique but with Naruto headbutting Gaara awake and telling him, jinchuriki to jinchuriki, that other people are what make the pain survivable. Gaara leaves changed, apologizing to his siblings for the first time.

The arc closes with the Third's funeral in the rain and Jiraiya's reflection that Hiruzen died as a Hokage should. In story terms the Leaf is weakened, leaderless and marked for the succession search that drives the next arc; Orochimaru, armless and desperate, becomes the clock ticking under Sasuke's curse mark.

Physically, this is volumes 13 to 16 territory, the point where Part I printings settle into their long commercial run. The Hokage funeral chapters and the Naruto versus Gaara chapters are among the most anthologized pages of the series, frequently excerpted in Jump anniversary and exhibition material.

Arc at a glance

Manga chapters 116 to 138 (volumes 14 to 16, following the finals chapters in volume 13). Anime: episodes 68 to 80. Key events: the invasion, the Reaper Death Seal, the death of Hiruzen Sarutobi, Gaara's turn.

Why collectors care

This is the first arc where a major death lands, and the funeral chapter's Jump appearance is a documented collecting target for issue hunters. It also closes the exam storyline that the first databook documents, making Rin no Sho a companion to exactly this stretch of volumes.
