What is Attack on Titan: School Castes?

The author’s own parody of his grim epic, hidden at the back of the last fourteen volumes.

From volume 21 onward, each tankōbon closes with a “fake preview”: a few pages of Attack on Titan: School Castes (also styled Attack! Titan High School in some translations), Isayama’s alternate-universe shorts in which his cast are modern schoolkids: Eren the ordinary student, Mikasa the goth, Armin the nerd, Levi the janitor. They are gag pages in the author’s loosest hand, and for years they were the manga’s worst-kept secret, beloved out of proportion to their page count.

Their long game paid off in public on 8 November 2024, when The Last Attack closed with a post-credits scene animating the Castes: the characters leaving a cinema, in modern clothes, having just watched Attack on Titan. It is the franchise’s gentlest artefact, a back-of-the-book joke that outlived the story it mocked, and the only part of the manga’s back pages ever filmed.

FINDING THEM

In the books
Volumes 21–34
The shorts run as fake previews in the final fourteen volumes of the Japanese and English editions alike. A volume without them in this range is worth a second look.
Not the Junior High universe
School Castes is Isayama’s own doodle-continuity, separate from Saki Nakagawa’s licensed Junior High manga, which plays a similar joke at full length.
