What is Attack on Titan: Lost Girls?

The spinoff with the strongest bloodline: written by the anime’s own screenwriter, for the series’ two most private soldiers.

Attack on Titan: Lost Girls is a novel by Hiroshi Seko, published by Kodansha on 9 December 2014 (Vertical’s English edition followed in June 2016). Seko is not a hired hand: he wrote for the anime throughout and became the Final Season’s series composer, which gives this book an authority spinoff novels rarely have. Its three stories give the interior lives the main series withholds: Annie’s undercover days in “Wall Sina, Goodbye,” Mikasa’s dream-world in “Lost in the Cruel World,” and a framing story binding them.

The material kept travelling: Ryōsuke Fuji’s manga adaptation ran in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine from August 2015 to May 2016 (two volumes), and Wit Studio animated all three stories as the OAD episodes bundled with manga volumes 24–26. Novel, manga, anime: Lost Girls is the one spinoff that exists in all three of the franchise’s media, each version by a different hand, which makes it the natural centre of this shelf.
