What is Attack on Titan: No Regrets?

The most adapted spinoff of all: one short story that exists as a game, a manga, and two anime episodes.

Attack on Titan: No Regrets (A Choice with No Regrets) is Levi’s backstory: his life in the underground city beneath the capital and the expedition that brought him into the Survey Corps. It began as a visual novel bundled with the anime’s Blu-ray releases, then became a manga by writer Gun Snark and artist Hikaru Suruga, serialized in Kodansha’s shōjo magazine Aria from November 2013 to June 2014 and collected in two volumes (April and August 2014), both published in English by Kodansha USA.

Wit Studio then animated it as the two OAD episodes shipped with manga volumes 15 and 16, completing a three-media chain no other spinoff matches except Lost Girls. The shōjo-magazine origin is the telling detail: by 2013 the franchise’s centre of commercial gravity included Levi’s enormous female readership, and Kodansha published his origin where that readership already was. Suruga’s clean, romantic line is the third distinct hand on this shelf, after Shiki’s polish and Isayama’s grit.

Why Aria magazine
Kodansha aimed Levi’s origin at a shōjo audience on purpose. The spinoff map of this franchise follows its readerships, not its chronology.
