What is Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight?
The second telling: television took the novels the OVA had to skip, and gave Spark his war.
Chronicles of the Heroic Knight aired on TV Tokyo from April 1 to September 30, 1998, in 27 episodes produced by AIC and directed by Koichi Chigira, adapting Masato Natsumoto’s manga version of Mizuno’s later novels. Its first episodes retell the War of Heroes from the new generation’s side, then hand the series to Spark, the young knight of the third campaign, and the plot to resurrect Kardis, goddess of destruction.
Where the OVA ran out of novels and improvised an ending, the TV series adapts books three and four and six and seven comparatively faithfully. It is the more complete Lodoss, drawn with a lighter television hand, and it carries one of the most famous opening themes in anime.
THE SERIES
AIC · 1998Two generations
Parn and Deedlit open the series as legends; Spark, the mercenary Shiris, and the berserker Orson carry it. The structure is the novels’ own: heroes become history.
The Leaf connection
Maaya Sakamoto, who sings the opening, also voices Leaf, the half-elf priestess of the new party: the voice of the theme is inside the story.
Welcome to Lodoss Island!
Each episode closed in the Japanese broadcast era alongside the chibi comedy shorts of the same name, spun off from Rei Hyakuyashiki’s 4-koma manga, with a 35-minute film version released April 25, 1998.
OVA OR TV?
The honest comparisonFor the paintings
The OVA, and it is not close: Madhouse’s video-budget art is the franchise’s visual summit.
For the story
The TV series, which covers the whole arc of the later novels that the OVA could only compress and re-end.
For the shelf
Both were Central Park Media staples in the West, went out of print together, and were rescued together by Funimation in 2017. They are a pair, in production and in collecting.
