What Is Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest?

The sequel Mashima writes and storyboards, and another artist draws.

Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest is the official sequel to Fairy Tail, launched on Kodansha's Magazine Pocket app on July 25, 2018, a year after the original manga ended. It picks the team up one year after their victory and sends them to the continent of Guiltina to attempt the guild's legendary unfinished job: a quest no one has completed in over a century, sealing the Five Dragon Gods.

Its production arrangement is the interesting part. Mashima provides the story and the storyboards, the full panel-by-panel layouts, while Atsuo Ueda draws the finished pages. The sequel is therefore Mashima's composition in another artist's hand, an arrangement he accepted when his editor asked him to remain involved rather than simply license the name.

Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest volume 1 Japanese cover
Volume 1, in Japanese
Kodansha · November 9, 2018 · ISBN 978-4-06-513398-9. The cover credits read as the series works: story and storyboards by Mashima, art by Atsuo Ueda.
How it began
The sequel was developed before the original manga's final volume even shipped. Mashima had not planned to draw a continuation; asked by his editor to stay involved, he took the role of writer and storyboarder, producing the panel layouts, the neemu, that another artist would finish.
The artist
Atsuo Ueda, who had drawn the Fairy Tail spin-off work before, won the drawing job. Reviewers of the first volume found his imitation of Mashima's style close enough that the differences were fairly negligible.
The schedule
The manga launched on Kodansha's Magazine Pocket app on July 25, 2018, with the first chapter printed simultaneously in Weekly Shōnen Magazine. After six weekly chapters it settled to the biweekly pace planned for it.
The count
Twenty-four tankōbon volumes had been released in Japan as of August 2026, with Kodansha USA publishing the English edition since August 2019. The series is still running.
The anime
J.C.Staff's adaptation aired from July 7, 2024 to January 5, 2025: 25 episodes. Shinji Ishihira, director of all 328 episodes of the original anime, returned as chief director, and Yasuharu Takanashi returned to compose the music.
