What is Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise?

The Yakuza studio rebuilt its life’s work around a different stoic man in a ruined city, and cast Kiryu to play him.

Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise, Hokuto ga Gotoku in Japan, is a PlayStation 4 action adventure by Sega’s Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the makers of the Yakuza series, released in Japan in March 2018 and in the West that October. Rather than adapt the manga, it writes an original story: Kenshiro, believing Yuria dead, follows a rumor to Eden, a walled city around a relic of the old world, and the game builds the Yakuza structure inside it, streets, side stories, minigames, a cabaret club to manage, an arena, and the wasteland beyond the walls to drive.

The casting closes the joke the title starts: Kenshiro is voiced by Takaya Kuroda, the voice of Yakuza’s Kazuma Kiryu, and much of the Yakuza ensemble appears around him in new roles. Combat translates the studio’s brawling into Hokuto Shinken, pressure points and all, with the manga’s death cries rendered in giant onomatopoeia type across the screen.

THE GAME, IN PARTS

PS4 · 2018
An original story
Unlike the Musou games’ retelling, Lost Paradise assumes the reader’s knowledge and writes new chapters: Eden, its sphere-city relic, and a Yuria storyline that diverges from the manga on purpose.
The Yakuza inheritance
Exploration, substories, minigames and management systems carried over bodily, the comedy of the hostess club run by Kenshiro included, played entirely straight by him, which is the comedy.
The voice as thesis
Kuroda’s Kenshiro is the game’s argument in one decision: two forty-year traditions of the strong, silent protector, one actor. Japanese players heard Kiryu say “You are already dead”; the West received both Japanese audio and an English dub.
