What is Hokuto no Ken: Ken’s Rage?

Dynasty Warriors, one man against the wasteland’s armies, except the one man was always the premise.

In 2010 Koei Tecmo folded Hokuto no Ken into its Musou formula and produced the most natural fit the formula ever found: Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage, Hokuto Musou in Japan, released March 25, 2010 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and in North America and Europe that November. Kenshiro alone against hundreds is not a power fantasy imposed on the manga; it is the manga, panel for panel, and the game’s Legend Mode retells the story’s first half, from Shin to Raoh, with the other duelists playable in their own modes.

The sequel, Ken’s Rage 2 (Shin Hokuto Musou, December 2012 in Japan, 2013 in the West), expanded the cast sharply, quickened the pace, added online play, and carried the adaptation through the manga’s second half, the Celestial Emperor and the Land of Asura, the arcs the 1980s anime age had left least covered in games. It also reached the Wii U, the franchise’s only appearance on that hardware.

THE TWO GAMES

Koei Tecmo · 2010 and 2012
Ken’s Rage · 2010
PS3 and Xbox 360. Legend Mode covers the manga’s first great arc; Dream Mode writes original what-if campaigns for the supporting cast, the Musou house tradition.
Ken’s Rage 2 · 2012–13
PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U. The complete manga, a larger roster, faster combat, and the second half’s material that neither the old anime nor the old games had fully used.
Why it worked
The Musou crowd is usually an abstraction. In Hokuto no Ken the crowd is literal, the armies of Ken-Oh, and the one man walking through them is the most famous image in the manga. Form and source had been waiting for each other since 1983.
