What Is Hyo no Sho, the Second Naruto Databook?

Hyo no Sho, the Book of Hyo, is Naruto's second official databook, published by Shueisha in 2005 at the close of Part I. It updates Rin no Sho's documentation through the Sasuke Retrieval arc and gives the Akatsuki their first official profiles.

The book's timing is its character. Compiled as Part I ended, Hyo no Sho is a capstone for the first half: final Part I stat charts for the young cast, mission records completed through the retrieval mission, and documentation of the Sound, the Sannin and the curse mark system. Where Rin no Sho feels like a field guide to a school story, Hyo no Sho reads as the dossier of a world at war's edge.

Its Akatsuki material drew the most attention at release. The organization was still largely shadowed in the manga, and the databook's profiles and Kishimoto's notes offered the first structured information about members who had barely appeared, the kind of advance documentation that made databooks essential reading in the magazine era and fueled years of fan translation work.

The volume also expands the reference apparatus fans expect from the line: jutsu documentation with ranks and users, village and clan background, and timeline material that helps place the flashbacks and the previous wars. Read against Rin no Sho, the pair shows the series' scope doubling in three years, which is itself a piece of publishing history.

For collectors, Hyo no Sho is the Part I closer of the four-book databook set, and the one whose coverage, ending exactly at the timeskip, makes it the natural companion to a volumes 1 to 27 run. As always with this line, the Japanese edition is the complete reference; partial English adaptations do not replace it.

Collector note

Pairs with Rin no Sho as the Part I reference set. Verify obi and any insert extras when buying, since reference books were often stripped of both by reading owners.
