What Is Langrisser Mobile?

A Chinese studio’s licensed revival that outlived most of the series: the Langrisser that never went away.

In August 2018, eight years after the last attempt at reviving Langrisser had fizzled, the series returned in the unlikeliest place: a free-to-play phone game from Zlongame of Beijing, licensed by the rights holder Extreme and marketed in China as the series’ sixth main entry. It launched at home to chart-topping success, then worldwide on January 22, 2019, with a Japanese launch following the same year and a PC version after.

What makes it more than a licensing footnote is fidelity. Langrisser Mobile kept the series’ actual systems: commanders leading hired soldiers, the affinity web, and advancement along class trees, wrapped around a summoning system that gathers heroes from every game in the series. It arrived with more than 300 stages and a new score by the series’ own composer, Noriyuki Iwadare. This page documents the game and what it did for the name.

THE GAME

The classic systems, kept
A new war, an old cast
A fresh campaign with a new trio of heroes fronts the game, but its roster is the whole series: Ledin’s generation, Erwin’s, the Saturn casts, all summonable into one army.
Nothing watered down
Contemporary coverage stressed the point: the developer did its best not to dilute the commander-and-troop battles and class progression that define the series, a rare promise for a phone conversion, and by the reviews of the Chinese launch (a 4.8 average across tens of thousands of ratings at the time), it kept it.
The composer returns
Iwadare, who scored the Mega Drive originals in 1991, composed for Mobile as well: a twenty-seven year thread through the series’ music.

THE CROSSOVERS

Guests from other shelves
Trails in the Sky · 2019
The first collaboration brought Falcom’s Estelle and Joshua into El Sallia within weeks of the global launch, with a second event adding Renne, Leonhardt, and Olivier.
Sakura Wars · 2019
Sega’s Sakura, Sumire, and Iris arrived the same year, in their Koubu mecha, the Imperial Combat Revue meeting the Descendants of Light.
The years after
The crossover program ran on: Yu Yu Hakusho, Record of Lodoss War, Trails of Cold Steel, and Overlord among the documented guests.

THE REVIVAL EFFECT

What Mobile did for Langrisser
The second English Langrisser
For most of the world, Mobile was the first playable Langrisser in English since Warsong, and it arrived globally, on the same day, for free: the opposite of the series’ entire Western history.
A two-front return
Mobile’s success ran alongside the Langrisser I & II console remake of 2019, each feeding the other: the phone game kept the name warm weekly, the remake gave it a shelf presence again.
