What is Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker?

Peace Walker is the 2010 PlayStation Portable entry directed by Kojima as a mainline chapter, in which Big Boss and his army without borders, Militaires Sans Frontieres, confront a secret nuclear deterrent experiment in 1974 Costa Rica.

Peace Walker launched in Japan in April 2010 and in the West that June. Kojima treated it as a full Metal Gear Solid, at one point considering the number 5 for it, and its story is load bearing: it bridges Snake Eater and the original Metal Gear, building Big Boss's mother base, introducing characters like Kazuhira Miller and the scientist Huey, and ending with the army and the bipedal weapon, Metal Gear ZEKE, that define the road to Outer Heaven.

The design is built for the PSP and for company: short missions, four player co-op against enormous AI weapons, base management where rescued soldiers staff departments, and monster crossover hunts licensed from Monster Hunter that only make sense as a Japanese PSP phenomenon. Cutscenes are told in Ashley Wood's motion comic style, a cost solution that became an aesthetic signature.

The HD Edition for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2011 translated the co-op to consoles and let saves transfer with the PSP original, and Peace Walker later anchored the second Master Collection discussions as the bridge chapter. The PSP original remains the design's native form, with Japanese and Western covers and a Japanese limited PSP hardware bundle carrying the game's camouflage identity.

Story wise, Peace Walker is where the series' tone pivots: the Costa Rica setting, the AI built from The Boss's memory and the deterrence debate make it the most explicitly political of the Big Boss games, and its ending feeds directly into Ground Zeroes, which opens on its wreckage.

Printed support included full Japanese official guides and a Western guide for both the PSP and HD releases; the co-op boss data and base management tables are the sections players actually used, because the game's systems density is closer to a management game than its predecessors.
