What is Metroid Dread?
The game that haunted Nintendo’s release lists for fifteen years, finished at last, and the best-selling Metroid ever made.
Metroid Dread is Sakamoto’s oldest unfinished idea: Samus hunted by something she cannot fight. He tried to build it for the Nintendo DS in the mid-2000s, twice. The hardware could not make the hunter frightening enough, and the project died both times, leaving only a name that leaked onto internal release lists and one taunting line in Prime 3: a scan noting that "Project Dread" was nearing completion. It was not.
THE HAUNTING
2005 to 2021Two cancellations
The first DS attempt came around 2005, the second around 2008. A prototype from the second attempt was shown behind closed doors at E3 2009 to Nintendo staff. Sakamoto shelved it again: the E.M.M.I. he imagined needed better technology to be dreadful.
The resurrection
MercurySteam’s work on Samus Returns convinced Sakamoto their engine and instincts could do it. Dread was announced at E3 on June 15, 2021, sixteen years after the title first leaked, and shipped that October 8.
THE GAME
Planet ZDR
The E.M.M.I.
Seven research robots, near-indestructible, patrol fixed zones. Inside their territory Dread becomes a stealth game: hide, cloak, run, and take the one counter window when it comes.
The finale of the saga
Dread is set after Fusion and closes the five-game arc of Samus and the Metroids that began in 1986. What the Metroid DNA inside her is becoming drives the final act; this archive does not spoil the answer.
The verdict
3.07 million copies: past Prime, past everything, the best-selling game in the series. The ghost project outsold the landmarks that were finished on time.
The special edition
The 2021 Special Edition bundled a steelbook, a 190-page art book spanning the five 2D games, and holographic art cards of their covers: the modern collector’s anchor for the series.
