What is Metroid: Samus Returns?

A Spanish studio pitched a Fusion remake; Sakamoto asked for Metroid II instead, and the 2D series came back to life.

MercurySteam of Madrid had made Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate, and pitched Nintendo a remake of Fusion. Sakamoto, impressed by their 2D craft, redirected them to the older, rougher game: Metroid II, unseen in original form since 1991. Samus Returns (2017) was the first side-scrolling Metroid in thirteen years.

THE REMAKE

SR388, rebuilt
The Game Boy planet redrawn in 3D on 2D rails: the life cycle, the acid seas, and the Queen, at a fidelity 1991 could not approach.
The melee counter
MercurySteam brought the counterattack from their Castlevania work: time a parry as an enemy lunges and answer with a cinematic shot. It changed Metroid’s close-quarters grammar permanently; Dread kept it.
Aeion abilities
The remake equips Samus with energy-fed Aeion powers, including a scan pulse that reveals the map’s secrets: an admission, built into the design, that the modern audience reads hidden walls differently.
The consequence
An 85 on Metacritic and a revived series: Sakamoto handed MercurySteam Dread next. Samus Returns is the audition that rebuilt Metroid.
