What is Metroid: Zero Mission?

The 1986 game, rebuilt by its own creators’ heirs, with an ending the original never had.

Metroid: Zero Mission (2004) is a remake with an argument: that the first game’s bones were sound and its silences were hardware, not intent. Zebes is redrawn, signposted by Chozo statues, and then, after Mother Brain falls, the remake keeps going somewhere the original never could.

THE ADDITIONS

What the remake adds
The epilogue
Shot down escaping Zebes, Samus loses the suit entirely and infiltrates a Pirate mothership in the blue Zero Suit, armed with a stun pistol. The stealth epilogue debuts the Zero Suit and reframes the whole series’ power fantasy: she is dangerous unarmoured too.
The original, included
Finishing Zero Mission unlocks the complete 1986 Metroid to play. The remake carries its own ancestor in its pocket. (Linking with Fusion likewise unlocked the original on GameCube.)
The reception
A 90 on GameRankings and 89 on Metacritic: judged not as a nostalgia exercise but as the definitive form of the first mission, which is why "Zero" retellings since have followed its template.
