What is Pars, the kingdom in Arslan?
Not Persia, but a thousand years of Persia folded into one kingdom.
Pars is an invention with footnotes. Tanaka built it as an amalgam of over a thousand years of Iranian history and legend, drawing on the Persian epic Amir Arsalan, the source of his hero’s name, and the Shahnama, with the era’s wars, splendour, and cruelties rearranged into a single stage: the fabulously rich capital Ecbatana, and at its border the zealot kingdom of Lusitania.
THE KINGDOM
Pieces of the worldEcbatana, the capital ablaze
The first novel’s title is the kingdom’s fall: Ecbatana burns, Andragoras III is betrayed by his own retainers, and Arslan escapes with one servant and a sword.
The Sixteen Winged Generals
Tanaka planned Arslan’s company as sixteen great captains, and took care to show each before and after they joined him, the party assembled one loyalty at a time.
Magic, kept on a leash
For most of the first half the supernatural barely intrudes: a few spells, one giant. Arslan is a war story about men, taxes, grain, and faith, the monsters arrive late, and by then the humans have done worse.
The questions under the war
Slavery, absolute monarchy, and religious obsession run beneath every campaign, the themes that keep a 1986 adventure novel argued about in 2026.
