What is Persona 2: Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment?

Persona 2 is a two part story told across Innocent Sin (1999) and Eternal Punishment (2000): rumors become reality in Sumaru City, and the second game retells and continues the first from another character's side.

Persona 2 is not one game but a linked pair. Innocent Sin launched in Japan in June 1999, following Tatsuya Suou and a group of students and adults investigating the Joker, a figure who grants wishes phoned in as rumors, in a city where rumors physically become true. Eternal Punishment followed in June 2000, shifting the lead to journalist Maya Amano and retelling the events through a parallel world where the first game's ending never quite happened.

The rumor system is the duology's signature: spread a rumor through the city's networks and it can change shop inventories, demon behavior and the story itself. Demon negotiation returned from the first game, now with group contacts where two or three party members perform a joint routine, and the cast mixes teenagers with adults, including a detective, a journalist and a fashion editor, which still sets Persona 2 apart from the school centered later games.

The release history is the famous part. Innocent Sin was skipped in the West at the time, a decision covered on its own page in this shelf, so Western players in 2000 received Eternal Punishment first, with references to a game they could not play. Innocent Sin finally reached the West officially as a PlayStation Portable remake in 2011, while Eternal Punishment's own PSP remake from 2012 stayed in Japan, leaving the duology split across formats to this day.

Artistically this is Kazuma Kaneko's era at its strongest: his demon designs and the sharp, adult character work define the duology's look, and Shigenori Soejima, later the series' defining artist, was learning the trade in the same art department. The two games look like siblings of the later entries but feel closer to classic Shin Megami Tensei in tone.

Collecting Persona 2 means collecting a puzzle: Japanese PlayStation copies of both parts, the Western Eternal Punishment disc, the Western Innocent Sin PSP release and the Japan only Eternal Punishment PSP remake. Printed guides exist for each version and are version specific, because enemy data, names and even available content differ between the PlayStation and PSP editions.
