What is Persona 3? FES, Portable and Reload explained

Persona 3 is the 2006 game that reinvented the series around a school calendar and Social Links, and it now exists as the original, the FES expansion, the Portable remake with a female lead, and the full Reload remake of 2024.

Persona 3 launched in Japan in July 2006 for the PlayStation 2. Its students fight Shadows during the Dark Hour, a hidden hour after midnight, inside Tartarus, a tower that grows out of their school, while by day the player attends class, builds Social Links and lives a school year that the series has followed ever since. The calendar structure, the sung battle themes and the Evoker summoning method all begin here, and each has its own page in this shelf.

FES, released in Japan in 2007 and in the West in 2008, is both an expanded edition and a sequel in one package: The Journey revises the main game with new Personas, events and a hard mode, while The Answer adds an epilogue campaign starring the android Aigis. For PlayStation 2 owners, FES is the definitive disc, and its Western release at a budget price made it one of the best value discs on the system.

Persona 3 Portable, for the PSP in 2009 in Japan and 2010 in the West, reworks the game around a menu driven presentation and adds the option that defines it: a female protagonist, with rewritten Social Links, new music and a different emotional color to the same year. It trims the 3D exploration and anime cutscenes but adds direct party control in battle, which the PlayStation 2 versions lack. Portable was ported to modern systems in 2023.

Persona 3 Reload, released worldwide in February 2024, is a ground up remake of The Journey in the Persona 5 engine style, with new voice acting, new scenes and quality of life systems, but without Portable's female route and, at launch, without The Answer, which arrived later as downloadable content in the Episode Aigis expansion. Reload is the most accessible version and the least complete in one specific way, which keeps the older versions relevant.

That split is the collecting story: no single release contains everything. The PlayStation 2 FES disc, the PSP Portable release and Reload's modern editions are complementary objects, and the Japanese and Western covers differ across all of them. Printed strategy guides were published for the original, FES and Portable in both Japan and the West, and because dungeon layouts, Social Link schedules and Persona fusion results differ between versions, a guide only truly matches its own edition.
