What is Platinum End, the third Ohba and Obata series?

The Death Note team's third series swaps gods of death for angels, and asks what people do with unearned power.

Platinum End ran monthly in Jump Square from November 4, 2015 to January 4, 2021, for 58 chapters in 14 volumes. Mirai Kakehashi, an orphaned student who has decided to die, is caught mid-fall by the angel Nasse and told he is one of 13 God candidates. God is retiring in 999 days, and each candidate's angel grants tools: wings for freedom, a red arrow that makes anyone love the shooter for 33 days, and a white arrow that kills.

For Obata's shelf, the series is the design sequel to Death Note. The winged beings are back, but where the shinigami were gothic monsters assembled from fashion references and bone structure, the angels are luminous and doll-like, and the drama plays out in the modern city rather than a rotting other world. The same pen that drew Ryuk's grin drew Nasse's smile.

The manga passed 4.5 million copies in circulation by December 2020, and Signal.MD's anime adaptation ran for 24 episodes from October 2021 to March 2022, covering the story to its conclusion.
