What is Pokémon Puzzle Challenge?

A beloved Nintendo puzzler wearing Johto's clothes, and better for the fit.

Pokémon Puzzle Challenge launched in Japan as Pokémon de Panepon on September 21, 2000, and in North America on December 4, 2000. It is the Pokémon edition of Panel de Pon, Nintendo's falling-block puzzle series, in which players swap adjacent panels to clear chains while a stack rises from below.

The reskin is thorough. The fairies of the original give way to Johto's gym leaders, Elite Four and Pokémon, with Gold and Silver era music and presentation throughout, and the structure adds challenge modes built around the second generation's roster.

It is the Game Boy Color counterpart to the Nintendo 64's Pokémon Puzzle League, released the same season, and together they mark the moment Pokémon's spin-offs expanded from role-playing into every genre Nintendo owned. A Pokémon game with no catching, no trading and no battles, only blocks, and it works.

For the shelf, Puzzle Challenge documents a design lineage worth knowing: Panel de Pon is one of Nintendo's most persistent puzzle systems, and this cartridge is its Game Boy Color peak.
