What is Silent Hill: Origins?

Silent Hill: Origins is the 2007 prequel developed by Climax Studios, first for the PSP and later ported to PlayStation 2, in which truck driver Travis Grady rescues a burned girl from a fire and walks into the town's ritual history.

Origins was released for the PlayStation Portable in November 2007, with a PlayStation 2 port following in 2008. It was the first Silent Hill made outside Japan, by the British studio Climax, and it takes the prequel's usual risk: explaining mysteries, Alessa's burning, the cult's ritual and the town's split worlds, that the original game left suggestively unexplained.

Travis is a long haul trucker with his own buried trauma, and the game's Otherworld shifts are triggered by mirrors, a mechanic that lets the player cross between the fog world and the rusted Otherworld at will. That single change alters the series' grammar: the nightmare stops being something that happens to you and becomes a door you choose, which fans still argue split the game's horror in two.

The combat leans into breakable weapons and thrown objects, televisions, toasters and IV stands included, a brawler flavor that fits Travis and divides everyone else. Akira Yamaoka returned for the soundtrack, with Mary Elizabeth McGlynn's vocals across four songs, and the score is the element of Origins that even its critics consistently praise, which matters on this shelf because the soundtracks page treats his work as the series' spine.

Physically the game exists in two native forms, the PSP UMD and the PlayStation 2 port, with Japanese and Western covers diverging as this series' covers usually do. The PSP original is the design's home format; the port is the easier way onto a television and the one many Western players met first.

Guides for Origins were published in the West for both versions, and because enemy placement and some content shift slightly between the PSP and PlayStation 2 builds, the version note on a guide's cover is worth reading before pairing it with a copy.

TWO NATIVE VERSIONS

One prequel, two discs worth of difference
PSP original (2007)
The intended format: mirror transitions and combat tuned for the handheld.
PlayStation 2 port (2008)
A home console conversion with adjusted presentation; the more common Western shelf copy.
