What is Tales of Legendia?

It is the mothership line's orphan: a 2005 PlayStation 2 adventure set aboard a colossal ancient ship, beloved for its music and cast, and stranded on its original disc.

Tales of Legendia, released in Japan on August 25, 2005 and in North America on February 7, 2006, is set on the Legacy, a ship so vast it functions as a continent, sailing an ocean world long after its builders vanished. Senel Coolidge arrives on it chasing his kidnapped sister Shirley, and the story splits in two: a main quest, then a set of character quests that give every party member a full second act, a structure no other Tales attempts.

Everything about its making is an exception. It was developed by Namco's internal Project Melfes team rather than the Tales Studio, its characters were designed by anime director Kazuto Nakazawa, and its combat was deliberately built to feel like a brawler. Its music, by Go Shiina, is the only mothership score not led by Motoi Sakuraba, and it is routinely ranked the finest in the series. Two CD dramas followed in August and September 2005, extending a cast Japanese fans took to immediately.

English coverage was real but brief. BradyGames published a full official strategy guide in North America, walkthrough, maps and bestiary, so Legendia is documented in English better than several more famous entries. What it never received, anywhere, is a second edition: no port, no remake, no remaster, on any platform, in twenty years.

That makes Legendia the Remastered Project's most poetic candidate. Producer comments about prioritizing feasibility and source code have not named it, but no title in the line has more to gain: a brawler battle system modern players would read instantly, Nakazawa's designs, and Shiina's score, all currently locked to a 2005 disc.
