What is the Alabasta Saga?
The saga builds in layers the East Blue never attempted: the twin capes and Laboon the whale, Whiskey Peak's bounty hunter welcome, Little Garden's dinosaurs and giants, and the Drum Island winter arc that recruits Tony Tony Chopper, the reindeer doctor whose backstory with Dr. Hiriluk is the series' first full statement of its theme, that a life is defined by when the sakura bloom, not by strength.
Alabasta itself is a political thriller wearing an adventure's clothes. Crocodile spent years as the kingdom's hero while his agents manufactured drought and rebellion, hunting the Poneglyph that locates the weapon Pluton. The saga introduces the Poneglyphs, Nico Robin as an antagonist, the Will of D through quiet hints, and Ace, Luffy's older brother, walking out of a restaurant scene into franchise history.
The farewell to Vivi, the crew's silent raised arms showing the X marks of friendship because speaking would expose her, is among the most reproduced sequences in the manga, and it is the moment One Piece's readership in Japan consolidated from hit to institution. The tankobon volumes of this saga, roughly 12 to 23, carry some of Oda's strongest desert and crowd art, drawn while the anime was simultaneously adapting it.
Collectors meet this saga in the anime's first great home video block and in the much-discussed 2007 film Episode of Alabasta, a compressed retelling whose existence as a theatrical object is itself collected. The Library's movies page places it in the full filmography.
