What is the Hellsing Organization?

A royal order of vampire hunters, run by Van Helsing’s descendants and hidden inside the British state.

The Hellsing Organization’s formal title is the Royal Order of Protestant Knights. It was founded by Abraham Van Helsing, the Dutch doctor of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, working with the British government after his victory over the Count, and it has been directed by his descendants ever since. Its mission is plainly stated in the story: search out and destroy the undead and the supernatural forces that threaten England, quietly, before the public ever hears.

HOW IT WORKS

The shape of the agency
The director
Leadership passes down the family. Arthur Hellsing ran it in the twentieth century; his daughter Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing inherited it as a child and holds it with absolute personal authority, including command of Alucard himself.
The Round Table
Hellsing answers to a council of twelve, the Round Table Conference, drawn from Britain’s military, police, and intelligence establishment. It funds, oversees, and occasionally tries to restrain the agency.
The household
On the ground it is a private army in a country house: uniformed troops, the butler Walter C. Dornez, once its most feared field agent, and one bound vampire as the final argument.
The family name
In the story’s telling, the Van Helsing name was Anglicized to Hellsing along the way, gaining its second L. The agency took the family’s name, and the family took the agency as its inheritance.

THE RIVALS

Two mirrors
Iscariot
The Vatican’s Section XIII, Iscariot, is Hellsing’s Catholic mirror: a secret order doing the same work under Rome. Hirano created it for the sole purpose of being Hellsing’s rival, and the two agencies despise each other on principle.
Millennium
The third force is the remnant of a wartime project that fled Europe in 1944 and spent fifty years preparing a return. Where Hellsing is a family duty and Iscariot a religious one, Millennium is a grudge with an army.
The backronym
The OVA’s production booklets expand HELLSING as “Her Royal English Legions of Legitimate Supernatural and Immortal Night Guards.” It is a piece of playful packaging from the anime’s materials, not a name the manga ever uses.
