What is the Hole in Dorohedoro?
Three realms, one plumbing system: everything in this world runs on smoke.
The Hole is a city, and a condition. It is where humans live in Dorohedoro: a rain-drowned slum of factories and tenements where sorcerers from another world drop in to practise their magic on whoever is nearby, and leave the hospitals to deal with the results.
Hayashida builds the setting from a single material, black smoke, and spends it three ways: as weather, as currency, and as caste. These are the three realms it connects.
THE HOLE
The human worldThe rain
What falls on the Hole is spent sorcerer smoke, drifting down from the other world. The rain is more than atmosphere: it dulls sorcerers’ powers, which is why the city’s residents can fight back at all, and why the sorcerers hate the place they cannot leave alone.
The institutions
A city under magical weather builds defences: Central Hospital, which treats magic victims and employs Caiman, and the Hungry Bug, Nikaido’s gyoza restaurant, the warmest room in the series. The Hole is drawn as a working city, not a backdrop.
The people
Humans cannot use magic. That single fact organises the whole society: they are quarry, patients, cooks and, in the Cross-Eyes’ allies, partisans.
THE SORCERERS’ WORLD
Where the smoke comes fromSmoke biology
Sorcerers are a separate species, made long ago by the first devil. Each carries organs that produce one kind of black smoke: transformation, healing, mushrooms, time. One sorcerer, one gift. Output is destiny, and the strong live like aristocrats while the weak sweep up.
Masks and doors
Devils make each sorcerer’s mask, the sign of their gift, and sorcerers travel by summoning doors, which is how the Hole gets its unwanted visitors. Bottled smoke can be sold, so magic itself circulates as goods.
Black powder
The illicit booster: a drug that multiplies a weak sorcerer’s output, dealt by the Cross-Eyes gang as their weapon against the strong. The well-run En family at the top and the powder economy at the bottom are the same system, seen from two ends.
Blue Night
The partner festival, where sorcerers sign magical contracts pairing their gifts. Even romance in this world is paperwork, sealed by devils.
HELL
The third realmChidaruma
The first devil, who created the sorcerers, by his own account, because eternity was boring. He presides over Hell and treats the other two realms as his theatre. Volume 21’s cover is his portrait.
Devils
A devil is a sorcerer who ascended: through training and ordeal, the powerful few become immortal devils and join Hell’s administration, feared and courted by everyone below.
A place, not an ending
Hell in Dorohedoro is a location with prisons, staff and visiting hours, reached by the living as well as kept by the dead. The cosmology stays as practical as the plumbing.
THE DESIGN
Why it holds togetherOne material, three economies
Smoke is weather in the Hole, status among sorcerers, and raw material in Hell’s order. A single substance doing three jobs is why an eighteen-year improvisation reads as one coherent world.
