What is the Marineford War saga?

It is the saga closing the manga's first half, in which Luffy storms the prison Impel Down and then the Marine headquarters at Marineford to save his brother Ace from execution, failing in the series' most consequential death, as Whitebeard's death ends one era and starts another.

The build runs through Amazon Lily and Impel Down, a prison-break arc that assembles the war's unlikely army of former enemies, Crocodile, Buggy, Ivankov, Jinbe, from the series' own history. Oda structures it as a descent through a Dantean prison and an ascent into a war drawn at a scale the manga had never attempted, hundreds of named fighters on a single battlefield rendered across months of weekly chapters.

Marineford is the series' hinge. Whitebeard, the strongest man in the world, dies standing, using his last breath to confirm the One Piece is real, a scene that functions inside the story as a broadcast to the whole world. Ace dies in Luffy's arms shielding him from Admiral Akainu, the first present-tense death of a major character in a series famous for sparing them, and its weight is precisely its rarity. Luffy's collapse and the crew's forced two-year separation, communicated through the 3D2Y message, end the manga's first half both in story and in publication rhythm.

The volumes, roughly 56 to 61, are among the most reprinted in the series, and their covers, the war rendered as a group portrait across several volumes, shelve as a panorama. Japanese guidebooks treat the war as the series' summit event, and the anime's adaptation, whatever its pacing, fixed the arc's imagery in the culture, including Whitebeard's final stance.

Aftermath volumes matter to a complete shelf: the post-war flashback to Luffy, Ace, and Sabo's childhood recontextualizes the loss and plants the third brother whose return the Dressrosa saga pays off. A Marineford shelf missing the Sabo flashback volumes is missing the saga's actual ending.
