What is the Persona 5 manga?

The Persona 5 manga is Hisato Murasaki's adaptation of the game, serialized by Shogakukan from 2016, which retells the Phantom Thieves' story with the hero named Akira Kurusu and room to expand scenes the game only implied.

The manga began serialization in 2016 on Shogakukan's MangaONE app and Ura Sunday site, with print volumes published under the Ura Sunday Comics line, an unusual home given the game's own publisher ties, and a reminder that Persona's media rights spread widely. Artist Hisato Murasaki draws a close adaptation: the Palaces, awakenings and heists follow the game's beats, paced for monthly chapters rather than a hundred hour playthrough.

One of its lasting contributions is a name. The manga calls the protagonist Akira Kurusu, while the anime named him Ren Amamiya, and the two names split the fandom's usage for years, with official media using both in different places. The manga is thus a source document for a piece of Persona trivia that still starts arguments.

As an adaptation it earns its place by expanding rather than merely compressing: downtime between heists, confidant scenes and reaction beats get page time the game's calendar rationed, and Murasaki's art translates Soejima's designs into a clean shonen line. A companion gag and anthology ecosystem surrounds it, including the Persona 5 Dengeki comic anthologies and the separate Persona 5: Mementos Mission manga, a side story series with its own volumes.

VIZ Media publishes the manga in English, so the physical comparison is tankobon against VIZ's larger trim English volumes, with different cover stock and presentation of the same Japanese cover art. Japanese volumes carry the original obi strips and print extras when bought early in their runs, details that vanish in later printings and in translation.

For collectors the manga is the most approachable print Persona 5: a running series of volumes that sits beside the game's design works and the anime sets. It also documents the game's story in the medium Japan actually reads weekly, which gives it a different weight from a Western tie-in comic.
