What is the Wano Country saga?

It is the manga's longest saga, set in the closed, occupied country of Wano, where the crew joins the Kozuki samurai's twenty-year revenge against the shogun Orochi and the Emperor Kaido, culminating in the Onigashima raid and Luffy's awakening as Gear Fifth.

Wano is the series' love letter to its own country: an isolationist Japan of shoguns, ronin, kabuki structure, the acts of the saga literally follow kabuki play structure, and ukiyo-e visual language, built over a decade of foreshadowing. Oden Kozuki, the samurai who sailed with both Whitebeard and Roger, anchors the saga's great flashback, which doubles as the fullest telling of Roger's own voyage the series provides and recontextualizes everything from Laugh Tale to the Poneglyphs.

The raid is the largest set piece in the manga: thousands of combatants, the nine Red Scabbards' inherited vengeance, the alliance of Luffy, Law, and Kid against two Emperors at once after Big Mom's pursuit arrives, and a night festival turned battlefield staged across a skull-shaped island. Yamato, Kaido's child and Oden's self-declared heir, became the saga's breakout character and a merchandise phenomenon in their own right.

Gear Fifth is the saga's gift to the culture: Luffy's fruit, revealed as the mythical Human-Human Fruit Model Nika, awakens into a form whose physics are cartoon logic itself, drawn by Oda explicitly in homage to the rubber-hose animation and Tom and Jerry gags he grew up on. The anime's adaptation of the transformation in 2023 became a global broadcast event, and the chapters and episodes are collected and graded accordingly in the modern market.

At roughly eighteen volumes (90 to 105), Wano is a shelf unto itself, and its volume covers lean hardest into Japanese art styles of any One Piece run, making the JP editions of this saga the ones cover collectors ask for first. The saga's end opens the Final Saga directly, with Egghead beginning in volume 105's wake.
