What Is Warsong, the American Langrisser?
Warsong is Langrisser I, renamed, repainted, and for twenty-five years the only Langrisser America ever got.
In April 1991 Masaya released Langrisser for the Mega Drive. The American publisher Treco brought the Genesis version west under a new name, Warsong, with a Western cover painting, an anglicized cast, and one inspired change: in Japan the legendary sword is called Langrisser, but in America the sword itself is named Warsong, so the title is the weapon. The game underneath, Team Career’s commander-and-army tactics, is untouched.
It was also a one-night stand. No sequel followed it west, and until 2016 Warsong stood as the only official English Langrisser ever released. Everything else on this page is what that lone cartridge contains, and what happened to it afterward.
THE RENAMING
One game, two castsGarett, in Japan Ledin
The hero: Prince Garett of Baltia in America, Prince Ledin in Japan, fleeing his fallen castle in the opening scenario to gather an army and retake it.
The supporting cast
Baldarov the sword master, Mina the cleric, Duke Carleon, the commanders Sabra and Bayard, and Emperor Pythion of the Dalsis Empire: every name on the American roster is a Treco-era rename.
The sword
The treasure Dalsis steals from Baltia is the magic sword Warsong, which has awakened an ancient evil. In Japan that sword is Langrisser, the soul-bound copy of the dark sword Alhazard.
The cover
A Western knight on a white horse under blackletter type. Series artist Satoshi Urushihara’s art appears nowhere on the American box.
THE GAME ITSELF
What the cartridge holdsArmies, not parties
Each hero is a commander who hires up to eight troops before a scenario, each troop standing for ten soldiers. The class of the commander decides what can be hired: only a Dragon Knight can field griffons.
Real stakes
Commanders gain experience and promote to stronger classes with new spells. A hero who falls is lost forever, and if the main hero dies, the game ends.
The campaign
From the siege of Baltia through the invasion of Dalsis to the citadel of Chaos in Seneferia, ending on a warning: Chaos exists because humans keep making war.

THE LONG SOLITUDE
One game, twenty-five yearsNo sequels west
Langrisser II, Der Langrisser, and the Saturn trilogy were never localized. Fan translations of II, Der Langrisser, and IV eventually did the work publishers would not.
The drought breaks
Aksys localized the 3DS revival Re:Incarnation Tensei in 2016; Langrisser Mobile and the Langrisser I & II remake followed in 2019 and 2020, retranslating Warsong’s own game from scratch.
