What makes the Sakamoto Days debut issue and Gear 5 issue collectible?

The debut issue, Weekly Shonen Jump 2020 No. 51, carries chapter one of Sakamoto Days, and the Gear 5 issue, 2022 No. 17, carries a Sakamoto Days cover while containing One Piece chapter 1044, the first Gear 5 chapter, making the pair the two documented key issues of the series' magazine life.

Weekly Shonen Jump issues are disposable objects by design, printed on cheap paper to be read in a week and recycled, and the collectible ones are those that a later moment loads with meaning. For Sakamoto Days there are two such issues, and they earn their status by different contents, which is why they are so often discussed, and sold, as a pair.

The debut issue is Weekly Shonen Jump 2020 No. 51, released in November 2020, carrying chapter one of Sakamoto Days and the series' first Jump cover presentation. First chapters of major Jump series are the foundational magazine collectible across the whole hobby, the One Piece, Naruto and Demon Slayer debuts being the established benchmarks, and the Sakamoto debut follows that documented pattern: its value rests on the chapter and the cover together, and on condition details specific to this issue, including the state of any inserted supplements and pages that used copies commonly lose or damage.

The Gear 5 issue is Weekly Shonen Jump 2022 No. 17, released in March 2022. Its fame is a cover story in the literal sense: the issue contains One Piece chapter 1044, in which Luffy's Gear 5 form first appears, one of the most celebrated chapters of the modern era, while the cover of the issue is given to Sakamoto Days. Identifying the Gear 5 chapter's issue therefore means finding the Sakamoto cover, the twist documented in this Library's dedicated Gear 5 issue page, and the reason this One Piece key lives inside the Sakamoto section.

Handling notes for both issues are the general Jump rules applied strictly: magazines of this era were printed in large numbers, so condition is the differentiator, with spine folds, sun fade on the cover, missing supplements and cut pages the faults that separate a display copy from a reading copy. Verify any copy against photographs of the cover, the spine and the contents page, including the chapter listing, before treating it as the key issue it is listed as, since adjacent issues of the same year wear similar covers and are routinely confused in listings.
