What was the Persona 25th anniversary release wave?

It was Atlus's rolling celebration from September 2021 through 2023 for the series' 25th year, whose lasting legacy was not the merchandise but the ports: Persona 5 Royal, Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable leaving their original platforms for Switch, Xbox, PlayStation and PC.

Atlus structured the anniversary as a year of announcements, opening in September 2021, 25 years after the first game's Japanese launch, with a dedicated site, commemorative art drawing the protagonists together, concerts, stage events and waves of licensed goods in Japan. Fans spent the year guessing at game announcements, and the celebration deliberately mixed the trivial with the substantial, which made its rhythm controversial while it ran.

The substance arrived in June 2022, when Atlus announced that Persona 5 Royal, Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable would come to Xbox, Windows, PlayStation and, for Royal first, Nintendo Switch. Royal launched across the new platforms in October 2022, and Golden and Portable followed in January 2023. For a series that had been PlayStation centered for a quarter century, this was the structural change the anniversary will be remembered for.

The physical consequences are still on shelves: first time physical editions of Royal for Switch and Xbox, new printings for modern PlayStation, and a fresh wave of players whose first Persona objects are these ports rather than PlayStation 2 or Vita cases. Limited Run and other partners added special physical runs for some platforms, extending the anniversary into the collector market directly.

Japan marked the anniversary with exhibitions, cafe collaborations, orchestra concerts and an extensive goods program, from apparel to replica items, most of it region locked in practice to Japanese retail and events. The gap between the Japanese celebration's physical abundance and the West's mostly digital one is itself a document of how the series' business still tilts.

Read with distance, the 25th anniversary was the moment Persona stopped being a platform's series and became a catalog: everything from Portable forward playable everywhere, with Persona 3 Reload arriving in 2024 as the first launch built for that new reality. The anniversary's ports are therefore not footnotes but the foundation of the modern shelf this section documents.
