What was the Tokyo Ghoul one-shot?

Before the series there was a single chapter, and it won its author his break.

In 2010, Sui Ishida entered a one-shot version of Tokyo Ghoul in the Young Jump Grand Prix, the magazine’s new-talent competition, and took second place in the 113th Grand Prix. Shueisha published the chapter in the second issue of Miracle Jump, released in March 2011. Six months later the serialised version opened in Weekly Young Jump.

The one-shot is a prototype of the series’ opening situation rather than a lost chapter of it, and Ishida returned to the one-shot form twice more while the series ran.

THE THREE ONE-SHOTS

Tokyo Ghoul (2011)

Tokyo Ghoul: Rize (2011)
A one-shot about Rize Kamishiro in Miracle Jump No. 6, December 2011. Ishida folded it into the series proper as the side story in volume 5.
Tokyo Ghoul: Joker (2014)
A one-shot in Weekly Shōnen Jump 2014 No. 31, June 30, 2014, crossing into the flagship magazine. It was collected in Tokyo Ghoul:re volume 3 as chapter 32.1.
