Who is Toshihiro Nagoshi?

The tanned, sunglasses-wearing producer who bet Sega's money on Japanese adults while everyone else chased Grand Theft Auto.

Toshihiro Nagoshi (born June 17, 1965) joined Sega in 1989, straight out of a film-production degree at Tokyo Zokei University, and spent over thirty years there. He created Super Monkey Ball and Yakuza, two series that could not be less alike, and for a decade he was the public face of Japanese game development's old guard.

THE SEGA YEARS

1989 · 2021
Under Yu Suzuki
Nagoshi started as a graphic artist in AM2, Sega's legendary arcade division, working under Yu Suzuki on titles like Virtua Racing. The arcade never left his design instincts: Yakuza's combat descends from his arcade brawler SpikeOut.
Amusement Vision
As head of Sega's Amusement Vision studio he shipped Daytona USA's home conversions, the first Super Monkey Ball games for Nintendo's GameCube, and F-Zero GX, made alongside Nintendo itself.
The bet
Ordered to make a new flagship, Nagoshi refused to fight Rockstar and EA for the global teenage market. The one audience nobody was serving, he argued, was the Japanese adult man. Yakuza was the result, approved only after chairman Hajime Satomi overruled the executives who had rejected it.
The top floor
Success made him Sega's chief creative officer, general director of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, and a board member at Atlus. Every Yakuza decision of consequence passed through him for sixteen years.

AFTER SEGA

2021 · now
The departure
Nagoshi left Sega in October 2021, alongside series producer Daisuke Sato, saying the executive work had pulled him too far from making games directly. The series he created stayed behind, in the hands of his own writer, Masayoshi Yokoyama.
Nagoshi Studio
Backed by NetEase, he founded Nagoshi Studio and unveiled its first game, the crime drama Gang of Dragon, in 2025. Wikipedia's summary of the venture closes the loop with unusual bluntness: the studio itself was shut down in 2026 after its backer pulled funding.
